The author emigrated from France and was drawn to the American west and experienced some exciting times, including gold rushes, Indian and Mormon wars, the Portneuf Massacre, life in Indian villages, Montana criminals and the hanging of Slade, the coming of the railroads, stage coaches, western politics, freighting in Wyoming, and other adventures.
