London: Published by Jacob Tonson, John Poulson, J. Darby, A Bettesworth, and F. Clay, in Trust for Richard, James and Bethel Wellington. MDCCXXXII (1732) First Bentley edition and it was never followed with another. Bound in full, old, brown calf. There are gold ban Leather on spine crackled, but it is all together and is firm. There is some rubbing and general aging to the leather, but it has a beautiful antique patina. Pages are age-rippled and toned with moderate foxing. The title page is detached but present. Overall, it is Very Good. This is a very attractive, rare and important book.
"Richard Bentley was a well-respected classical scholar and editor in his day but his edition of Paradise Lost is now something of a curiosity. Working on the premise that errors crept into the blind poet's text because of his reliance on amanuenses and an editor, Bentley suggests that over 800 emendations to the 1674 printed test....However, despite his good intentions, Bentley's emendations infuriated many poetry lovers and attracted much critical response."
